Administration Guide > User provisioning
User groups
User groups represent teams inside a workspace, with hierarchy, identity-provider membership, visibility controls, and optional linked channels.
Group model
User groups are distinct from ad-hoc group chats. They can be hierarchical, can optionally back a chat channel, and can be mentioned with a group slug.
Membership sources
Manual, SCIM, and OIDC memberships coexist on the same user/group pair. Effective membership is the union of those source rows, allowing identity-provider automation without overwriting manual administrative decisions.
Roles and visibility
Groups support system roles and custom roles, with SCIM-specific safeguards for member management. Visibility can be public, private, or hidden, with elevated permissions for users who need to view hidden groups.
