Channels and group conversations

Channels organize ongoing team conversations, while direct and group conversations keep smaller work focused.

Channel types

Public channels are discoverable spaces for shared topics. Private channels restrict visibility and membership. Group conversations are smaller multi-user conversations that do not need the same long-lived channel setup.

Browse and join

Browse available channels from the channel directory or Dashboard / Home directory on desktop. Join channels relevant to your work, leave channels you no longer need, and use favorites or pinned conversations to keep important spaces nearby.

  1. Open the channel list or directory.
  2. Browse subscribed and available channels.
  3. Open a channel to preview its topic and activity.
  4. Join, leave, favorite, or pin the channel based on how often you use it.

Create and manage

Channel creation, editing, archiving, deleting, and member management may require permissions granted by an admin. Managers can perform these actions, and elevated users may receive specific channel permissions such as creating, editing, archiving, or deleting channels.

  1. Choose the create channel action when it is available in your app.
  2. Enter a clear channel name and choose whether the channel should be public or private.
  3. Add initial members when creating a private or focused channel.
  4. Save the channel and share its purpose with the first message or topic.
